We made and defined history. And we have proven it.
For 57 years, the UP Journalism Club (UPJC) has been in the forefront in its advocacy of critical thought and action, in its promotion of responsible reporting, and in its campaigns on media awareness among students in the University.
As a matter of fact, we have reached through different schools not just in the metro but as far as Ilocos Sur, La Union, Naga City, Bacolod City, and Marinduque among others, in our flagship project, the annual Campus Journalism Workshops (CJWs), offered to elementary and high school students.
With the help and support of our alumni — among them are Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility Executive Director Luis Teodoro, Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) Executive Director Malou Mangahas, former Philippine Journalism Review (PJR) editor-in-chief Chit Estella-Simbulan, and TV5 News Director Ed Lingao – we have continuously triumphed in our activities and undertakings. One proof is that for 57 years, the UPJC legacy, spirit, and action have been emblazoned on the history of the college and of the University.
So as we pay tribute for the organization’s success, we bring you UPJC Month: Proven 57, More to Be Written with a rich line-up of activities in store for you.
On January 13, join the members of the organization as UPJC performs the Grand Launch at the CMC Skywalk at 12 p.m. Quench your thirsts and satisfy your cravings as we begin with the Grand Pakain after the launch of the exhibit.
Aside from being an academic organization, UPJC never forgets to give back. On January 23, we are set to read stories, play bedtime games, and win the hearts of bed-ridden children in UPJC Cares, an outreach program for the patients at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center.
After Tropical Storm Sendong struck the nation, it is now time to assess how they were reported by the media and how people were portrayed in many different platforms. UPJC will hold its annual beat talk titled Hazard Alert: Reporting on Natural Disasters on January 18, 10 a.m. at the CMC Auditorium.
Continuing with our tradition, UPJC members will share their knowledge and skills in campus journalism to students, but this time, it’s with little kids budding to be journalists in the Junior Campus Journalism Workshop at Culiat Elementary School on January 21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Dying for a right job in mass media? Then this career orientation is perfect for you. Come to UPJC’s Gear Up: Job Hunt with Swagger on January 26, 1 p.m. at the CMC Auditorium.
On January 28, our second documentary-making competition, Dokyskul 2012, is set to hone young minds as they discover a different platform in expressing their insights on January 28 at the Balay Kalinaw.
On February 3, members of the UPJC get challenged with their singing prowess and poetry-writing skills in Interlude: A Night of Strings and Verses.
Together with UPJC, let’s all prove that we cannot only make history but define it.
