The UP Journalism Club (UPJC) is gearing up to fact-check the upcoming 2025 midterm elections through FactRakers in partnership with the newly relaunched Tsek.ph, the Philippines’ pioneering fact-checking coalition.

This year, FactRakers is also collaborating with Tinig ng Plaridel, the official student publication of UP College of Media and Communication (CMC).

“This reflects our commitment to upholding truth, countering disinformation, and promoting responsible journalism especially in these critical times,” Associate Professor Yvonne T. Chua from the UP Department of Journalism said during the Feb. 7 Tsek.ph launch.

Chua supervises FactRakers, a student-led fact-checking initiative by journalism majors.

UPJC and Tinig ng Plaridel will also work with community-oriented independent outfit FYT Media in producing “hyperlocal” fact-checks and short-form explainers to prebunk and debunk election-related disinformation ahead of May 12.

A collaborative fact-checking project, Tsek.ph was launched in 2019, initially bringing together three academic institutions and 11 media partners. Tsek.ph has since broadened its network in the 2022 elections, adding new members from academia and media, and fact-checkers from civil society and multisectoral organizations.

Tsek.ph is supported this year by the International Media Support, Meedan, Embassy of Canada, UP Journalism Department and the UP CMC Foundation.
