UJP-UP ‘soars high’ with call to defend campus press in 36th anniversary

The Union of Journalists of the Philippines – UP (UJP-UP) is celebrating its 36th anniversary this September with the theme “SALIMBAY” (English translation: “soaring”) to underscore the importance of promoting advocacy journalism and to honor the parliamentary struggle to defend the freedom of expression and the rights of student journalists.

This month-long celebration focuses on the Union’s persistent dedication in defending the truth in historical accounts and its integral role in the youth’s fulfillment of their democratic rights by launching various events this month. The events are as follows:

AGAPAY, a month-long donation drive that aims to provide assistance to a chosen beneficiary. This year, UJP-UP has chosen to support the Liwanag at Dunong Project. It is an initiative of the non-profit organization EcoHumans Inc. which supports the displaced Aeta community of Sitio Gayaman in Tarlac.

PANAOG: Grand Applicants’ Orientation, where UJP-UP welcomed the new batch of applicants on Sept. 12 and introduced the Union and its principles.

In time for the 52nd anniversary of the Martial Law declaration, they will also screen on Friday JL Burgos’ award-winning documentary film “Alipato at Muog” which tackles the unresolved disappearance of activist and the director’s brother Jonas Burgos.

It will also include this year’s media report titled “RE: PRESS” – The Urgent for a Campus Press Freedom Bill, which seeks to address campus press freedom abuses across the country. Speakers from prominent organizations and campus publications will join the event.

As UJP-UP moves forward in its 36th year, it calls upon fellow journalists, students and advocates to join the movement in defending campus publications and upholding freedom of expression in all forms.

The UP Journalism Club is an official partner for this month-long event.
